Shorter Bouts of High Intensity Exercise Improve Physical Fitness

It is a commonly held perception that getting in shape and staying there requires hard work and hours upon hours of training. Now, new research from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) shows the opposite -- just four minutes of vigorous activity three times per week is enough to make previously inactive men fitter and more healthy.

Regular training improves maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), which is a well-established measure of physical fitness. However, just how much exercise, and how intense that exercise should be to deliver the biggest benefit remains to be defined. Now, researchers from NTNUs KG Jebsen Centre of Exercise in Medicine/Cardiac Exercise Research Group have found that just three short high-intensity sessions (AIT) per week can make for substantial differences in the fitness of inactive men.

"Our data suggest that a single bout of AIT performed three times per week may be a time-efficient strategy to improve VO2max," says Arnt Erik Tjønna, a postdoctoral fellow at the centre and lead author of the study. Tjønna says one of the advantages of this approach is that it is easy for people to incorporate into their daily lives.

The researchers measured changes in VO2max and traditional cardiovascular risk factors in 24 inactive but otherwise healthy overweight men after they completed a 10-week training session that involved three weekly high-intensity interval sessions. One group of 13 followed a protocol that has previously shown to be effective, consisting of four intervals of 4 minutes of high intensity exercise at 90% of maximal heart rate (HRmax) interspersed with 3 minutes of active recovery at 70% HRmax (4-AIT), commonly known as 4x4 training.

The other group followed a protocol that consisted of one 4-minute interval at 90% HRmax (1-AIT). After training, VO2max increased by 10% in the group that had just one high-intensity session three times a week (1-AIT), while the group that followed the 4x4 regime increased its VO2max by 13%. Both groups saw decreases in their blood pressure, but the 1-AIT the groups blood pressures showed greater decreases than their 4-AIT counterparts for both systolic and diastolic readings.

Tjønna says while the results look promising, the number of study participants was small, which limits the scientists ability to extrapolate their findings. He also noted that people who are active probably wont benefit as much as the inactive participants did from the 1-AIT training regime.

"It has to be noted that the subjects were previously inactive, and the same effect on physical fitness cannot be expected in active individuals," he said. "Nevertheless, since we know that more and more people are inactive and overweight, the kind of improvement in physical fitness that we saw in this study may provide a real boost for inactive people who are struggling to find the motivation to exercise."

High Intake of Cholesterol Shown to Actually Repair Damaged Brains

Including high-cholesterol foods as part of a healthy diet may not be the poor dietary choice we have all been told it is, suggests a new study published in the journal Nature Medicine. It turns out that cholesterol actually helps increase production of an important component of the nervous system that facilitates proper nerve cell communication, and prevents the onset of brain diseases such as Parkinsons and Alzheimers disease.

The study focused specifically on patients with a condition known as Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease (PMD), in which nerve cells are unable to properly manufacture protective myelin sheaths. It is these myelin sheaths, which are composed of lipid fats and proteins, that allow nerves to communicate and send appropriate electrical signals that trigger movement and cognition, and that protect nerves from damage.

Cholesterol, which is commonly dismissed as harmful and something that people should avoid, actually contributes to producing and maintaining myelin sheaths. Without it, as evidenced by the recent studies, individuals with PMD -- and potentially all individuals -- are at a higher risk of developing cognitive illness and brain degradation. And particularly those with PMD, low-cholesterol diets are almost sure to leave them exceptionally prone to nerve damage.

"This six-week-long cholesterol treatment delayed the decline in motor coordination," wrote the scientists in their report. Researchers from the Max Planck Institute of Experimental Medicine in Germany fed a group of mice with PMD a high-cholesterol diet for six weeks, as well as another group of PMD mice a low-cholesterol diet. Those on the high-cholesterol diet stopped experiencing cognitive decline, while the low-cholesterol mice continued to get worse.

Cholesterol appears to be beneficial for everyone

Though the researchers attributed their findings about cholesterol specifically and solely to those with PMD, the implications for all individuals are striking, as the study further reinforces the idea that cholesterol is a necessary component of proper brain and nervous system function in everyone. This unconventional concept has been confirmed in several earlier studies, including a comprehensive study published in the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons. (http://www.jpands.org/vol10no3/colpo.pdf)

"Cholesterol acts to interlock lipid molecules, which stabilize cell membranes," writes Shane Ellison, M.S., in his book Health Myths Exposed. "[C]holesterol is a vital building block for all bodily tissues. Lowering such a vital molecule is absurdity. To illustrate, imagine that your house represents your body and the nails holding it together cholesterol. Now start pulling each and every nail out of the house. What happens? The house turns to a pile of rubble. The same is true for the human body."

Cholesterol-lowering statins are responsible for destroying health, causing Alzheimers

What this all means for statin drugs, which mainstream medicine has ridiculously dubbed miracle drugs, is that their cholesterol inhibiting properties can cause serious health problems down the road. By interfering with the livers natural function of producing cholesterol, statin drugs can actually strip the body of much-needed cholesterol, and cause serious nervous system and cognitive damage.

The key to promoting healthy cholesterol levels in the body is not to take synthetic drugs, but rather to achieve vibrant health through proper diet and exercise, which includes a diet rich in healthy saturated fats and, yes, even cholesterol.

"Saturated fat and cholesterol in the diet are not the cause of coronary heart disease," says Dr. George V. Mann, M.D., professor of Medicine and Biochemistry at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. "That myth is the greatest scientific deception of this century, perhaps of any century."

High Caffeine Drinks Disturb Intelligence

High Caffeine Drinks Disturb Intelligence
High Caffeine Drinks Disturb Intelligence - In moderation, caffeine can indeed increase the concentration, making us more alert and able to run through difficult challenges. However, these benefits continue to decrease along with the large number of caffeine consumption.

Energy drinks, which typically contain high concentrations of caffeine, the drink excessively will make the body become sleepy as the effects of alcoholic beverages.
In one study, students who were given low doses of caffeinated drinks (equivalent to half a can of energy drink), has a high response on test results that require rapid response on a computer screen.

But when the dose of caffeine-enhanced, they would respond slowly. The participants in the study also said that mentally feel over-stimulation and sleepy after drinking.

"Not a few energy drinks that also contain alcohol. Therefore, if consumed in excessive amounts can adversely effect cognitive function and reduced vigilance," said Cecile A. Marczinski, researchers from Northern Kentucky University.

Research conducted on 80 students aged 18-40 years. To determine the effects of caffeine, the participants were given energy drinks and the rest were given non-caffeine drinks.

Excessive consumption of these drinks can also cause heart was beating very fast due to the caffeine intake exceeds the recommended amount.

In Indonesia there are about 17,000 new cases of leprosy within a year. This makes Indonesia ranks third highest number of leprosy patients in the world. "A large number of residents can not be a reason. In comparison, Chinas population more than Indonesia, only 1500 new leprosy cases in a year.

If the leprosy patients detected and treated promptly, he will not transmit more disease.

Early detection of leprosy can be done by very simple and easy to do. The trick is to press the white spots that appear on the skin with a needle. If pressed white patches are numb should be no further examination.

Leprosy is a disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae. It is difficult infectious disease and infection that occurs has to do with the immune condition. Malnutrition and poverty, including factors that influence. Leprosy including infectious disease that is difficult. Its just that many people who do not know that. As a result, many leprosy sufferers who have a negative stigma.
